When you start to change your life, your old identity will fight like hell to stay in charge. And that old identity can sound like a voice in your head.

A voice of disapproval.
A voice of fear.
A voice of doubt.

Ask yourself: is that voice telling you the truth?

What is the obstacle that you are convinced is in your way? What is the thought that stops you before you even start?

Ask yourself: is it really true that these things are stopping you?

We all get scared. It’s okay to feel afraid. Fear thoughts are sprinkled into of the currents of life. But remember, life is continuously flowing and this is just one wave. Just because it is unfamiliar does not mean it is dangerous.

You are full of divine magic and love. Keep going.

Please stop letting your fear of making the wrong decision paralyze you into making none. Making mistakes can help stop you from living in fear. The more mistakes you make, the more you will see that you can live through it. And sometimes you can’t know until after you make the decision whether it was the right one or not.

So, go for it.
Make a decision.
Have the courage to practice making mistakes.
You can start small.

Besides, your mistakes are so much less important than what you do afterwards. Apologies are connection in action.

Contrary to what I have heard over and over in my lifetime, I do not believe that time heals all wounds. I believe this is a misconception that upholds the game of avoidance.

When we avoid what is bothering us and hold in our emotions, they end up getting stuck in our body. Until we give it our attention, face it head on, and feel it, we will just carry those wounds around while time continues to pass.

When we give our troubles the attention they are craving, something wonderful happens. Space opens up inside of us for more compassion, for ourselves and everyone else.

Open the spigot my dear. I promise you that it won’t last forever.
You are magic… and far more capable than you realize.

There is no award for the most overworked human of the year. And yet, busyness has become the new normal.

Some people are using busyness as a way to shield against emptiness. They believe that as long as they stay busy, their life will not be meaningless.

What if your life’s purpose was as simple as being good to yourself and others? What if we gave more value to finding the joy and learning from the pain? What if we measured a life by the smiles we shared and the love we gave?

It takes a lot of courage to reject the accolade of societal busyness.
But I know you, and you are brave.

I am willing to bet that you have something on your perpetual to-do list that you are avoiding. I know I am. What if you took a moment to ask yourself this question:

Is my avoidance due to busyness, laziness, or is it… fear?

Fear is quite powerful. It can immobilize us. And we can be stuck in this state of inaction without even realizing it. Fear can make us both frozen and numb.

So, how do we thaw in a world that makes us freeze? And if we don’t even realize we are in a freeze state, how do we figure it out? You actually have to do the one thing that feels the most contrary… you have to stop trying to figure it out. You are mentally exhausting yourself by thinking through all the negative scenarios. When we are frozen and gripping tightly to avoid doing the thing, we are actually using more energy than if we just did the thing.

Unclench. Let go.

Do one small thing that moves you towards completing the thing. Devote ten minutes and then stop. Dedicate five minutes if ten feels overwhelming. Breathe. Go for a walk.

You are an amazing, capable, and magical human. You can do it and you will only get better at it. You are going to be okay.

When someone asks you what you do, how do you answer? Do you describe yourself as a noun or a verb? Are you the thing or the action?

Are you a teacher or do you teach?
Are you a nurse or do you nurse others?
Are we human beings or human doings?

I think the answer is that we are both, but the balance is constantly shifting. Some days we are focused on being the artist and some days we are more focused on doing the art.

You are more than what you do. It’s a subtlety that’s worth reflecting on once in a while. You are how you communicate. You are how you respond. You are how you show up, which is an integral part of the rhythm of the world.

I know for a fact that you have positively influenced another person’s life without knowing it. I know that the thought of you has brought a smile to many faces. I know you have inspired countless others. And I just wanted to say that you are doing great work and I am grateful.

It is a fundamental human need to be heard. But what if we listened more and talked less? Knowing who to share our thoughts with is a learned skill. You cannot learn this skill from reading a book or listening to a podcast. This is a skill you must fumble through and learn the hard way.

It is allowing yourself to discover the steps to this dance we call life.

When we focus on listening, several things happen. We tap into curiosity. We worry less about how to respond. We are fully in the moment. And, we can open up to receiving this incredible gift: noticing how being in this person’s company makes us feel.

Two things can be true: who we surround ourselves with matters and we are not always going to get it right. Mistakes are imperative to the process. Adjustments are part of the choreography. You don’t know until you know and that’s okay.

Life is a dance.
Please give yourself permission to get on the dance floor.
We need you out there.
